First Year Vegetable Production Apprentice
This is an immersive farm experience, and an introduction to Organic Vegetable Production. Our apprentices gain experience with all aspects of organic farming at a small scale – from seed to distribution – and work as a team to provide fresh, nutritious food for 300+ families every week! Our young farmers learn the ropes of seeding, planting, cultivation, pest and disease management, harvest, post harvest, and farm market operations. Our goal is to help you build a foundation of knowledge through practical experience, while balancing the demands of production and our need to be financially sustainable.
It takes a lot of elbow grease to grow great vegetables! We work long hours, outdoors, in all weather – heat, humidity, cold, rain, and sometimes snow. All applicants must be willing and able to complete a season of farm work (i.e. bending, kneeling, squatting, and carrying 50lb regularly, sometimes in adverse conditions), communicate clearly and with respect for others, and be motivated to work efficiently, as a team *or alone*, in a fast-paced environment. We take regular field trips to tour other local, sustainable, small-farm operations during the season, and have a number of farm-focused books in our communal library for even more learning! Previous experience with manual labor, landscaping, construction, or commercial kitchens is valuable, but not required. A positive attitude, willingness to work towards the goal, and strong desire to explore farming as a career is a must!
Starts: April 3rd, 2023 Ends: Nov 22, 2023
